What are the plans that you have for this entire week?? Are you going to try and see any tents? Did you buy any dresses? We hope you enjoy this free time and make the best out of this last long break!
Queridos estudiantes,
¿Cuáles son los planes para esta semana? ¿Vais a intentar ir a alguna caseta? ¿Habéis conseguido algún traje de flamenca? ¡Esperamos que disfrutéis este tiempo libre y aprovechéis al máximo esta última semana tan larga!
Academics:
- Re-entry workshop: Tuesday, April 23rd & Wednesday, April 24th at 5:00 PM at CEA Global Campus.
- Most of you might have dealt with some culture shock coming to Seville, but what about going back home? While you may think that it will be easy to re-acclimate, you would be surprised. Some of if not all of you will go through reverse culture shock, and many past study abroad students find it more difficult than actually going abroad. This workshop will explain the process and provide tips on how to deal with academic and social/cultural shock.
Housing: There will be no cleaning services this week.
Student services:
- Overnight trip to Lagos, Portugal: next week, Friday 26th we will meet at the corner of the restaurant "Oriza" in front of the university of Seville to go from there to Lagos, Portugal. Do not forget your camera, some funds and your swimsuit! Next week we will post the itinerary for the trip. Stay tuned!
Student Committee's activities:
•Kayaking on the Rio Guadalquivir: Now that the weather is warmer and the sun is out, doesn’t kayaking down the river sound like a great way to soak up the rays and get some exercise? The student committee has organized a group to go and do just this with OutdoorSevilla!
When? Thursday, April 25th
Time? 6:00 PM
Price? 20 Euros (if 20 people are signed up. If not, 25 euros)
What's included? Two hours of kayaking (equipment included) with your friends where you will learn a bit about the bridges and see some spectacular views from a new perspective, and afterwards a barbeque to relax!
◦This is not a CEA sponsored activity, so it is optional and you will have to pay for it separately. In order to make this easier for you, an OutdoorSevilla representative will be coming to the CEA office on Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday April 23rd at 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM to collect your payment. (If you can't make it at that time, send the money with a friend).
◦THERE ARE LIMITED SPOTS AND THIS IS FILLING UP FAST. FILL OUT THE SURVEY OR LET US KNOW ASAP IF YOU WANT TO JOIN IN!
Soup Kitchen:
• A great way to get involved and give back to your community is by volunteering at local establishments. On a Sunday TBD you can go to the soup kitchen, prepare food, and then serve it to those who are less fortunate.
Food drive: If you want to give back but can’t make a time commitment, please bring in a non-perishable food item CEA and the student committee will organize it and bring it to the soup kitchen or ONG organization. You have until 2 weeks before the last day of the semester (Friday, may 3rd) to turn in non-perishable food items so the student committee can donate it.
Clothes drive: At the end of the semester when you're packing to go home, I bet you will notice that you have accumulated a lot of clothes you don't want anymore, books you won't bring back, etc. If you want to donate them instead of throwing them away, bring them to CEA and together with the student committee and ONG organazations we can donate them to people in need.
OFFICE HOURS DURING FERIA
CEA will be open 9:00-3:00 Monday-Friday,
except Wednesday April 17th we will be closed for a public holiday.
The April fair started back in 1846 as a livestock fair, but it didn’t take long for an air of festivity to take
over! These days it consists of dancing, dressing up in typical trajes de flamenco, drinking, riding in horse drawn carriages, and generally just having a great time! People get together in casetas which are tents with decorations, and a lot of food. Typically they are privately owned and you need an invitation to get in, but there are some public tents. The fair is well known nationwide and one of the biggest fairs there is! People come from all over the world to attend.
If you really want to live the Fair in an Andalusian way then let me tell you that the Feria day" is not over" until you have a cup of "caldo del puchero" (traditional Spanish soup made with chicken, meat, chick peas...) and a good dessert, either "churros" or "buñuelos".
The Feria is a time to enjoy yourselves. With that being said, we would like to give you some recommendations for your safety during the fair:
Into the culture...
Tapas bar recommendation: Chocolatería Asunción
Description: this is the most traditional place to have churros con chocolate in the city, try it!!
Spanish Recipe of the day: Huevos a la flamenca
Huevos flamencos are an old and very traditional Spanish dish, with many versions, depending on the area. This version of the recipe includes both chorizo and morcilla sausage with onion, garlic, pepper and tomato sauce. All that is topped with 2 eggs and baked in individual clay dishes. Top with garlic bread crumbs or “migas” and serve.
Ingredients:
•4-5 oz Spanish chorizo sausage
•8 oz Spanish morcilla de cebolla (aka onion) sausage
•1 medium yellow onion
•2 garlic cloves
•1 red pepper
•1 green pepper
•1 8 oz can tomato sauce
•1-2 Tbsp Spanish sweet paprika
•4 Tbsp dry sherry
•8 large eggs
•2 slices stale bread
•1 garlic clove
Preparation:
- This flamenco egg recipe makes 4 servings.
- Cut the chorizo sausage into thin slices. Cut the morcilla sausage into slices approximately 1/2 –inch thick.
- Chop the onion and slice the garlic cloves. Chop the peppers, removing the membrane and seeds.
- Heat oven to 350F (180C).
- Heat approximately 2 Tbsp virgin olive oil in a large heavy bottom frying pan. Fry the chorizo and morcilla slices. Remove and set aside.
- In same pan, sauté the onion, garlic and pepper. Add the tomato sauce, paprika and sherry and reduce.
- Divide onion-pepper mixture between four glass, clay or ceramic, oven-proof dishes. Arrange the pieces of chorizo and morcilla sausage on top in each of the dishes. Break two eggs on the top of each dish. Place the dishes in the hot oven until egg whites are cooked, about 10-15 minutes.
- While eggs are baking, crush stale bread into small pieces or crumbs using a mortar and pestle or food processor. Peel garlic clove. Heat the same frying pan, adding 1-2 more Tbsp of olive oil. Add garlic cloves to oil and fry without burning the garlic. Remove garlic. Add the bread crumbs to the pan and stirring, browning the crumbs quickly. Remove crumbs from pan and put in a bowl.
- When eggs are cooked, remove from oven and sprinkle seasoned bread crumbs over each dish.
That´s all folks, have a lovely week!
