Dear students,

In light of the recent events in Boston, we would like to take a moment to express our deepest sympathies for those people who have been affected whether directly or indirectly by this act of malevolence against innocent citizens and participants of one of the biggest and most important marathons in the world.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you wish, as we are here to help you and would be more than happy to provide support in this situation.  Our hearts are with all of the people affected by this tragedy.

With that being said, we hope you all are enjoying your trips and have had the chance to make it to the Feria! What do you think so far?? Are you having fun?  Hopefully you like it as much as the Sevillanos do.

¿Habéis ido a la feria ya? ¿Qué os parece esta fiesta tan popular? ¡esperamos que os guste tanto como a nosotros!

Academics:
  • Re-entry workshop: Tuesday, April 23rd & Wednesday, April 24th at 5:00 PM at CEA Global Campus.
    • Most of you might have dealt with some culture shock coming to Seville, but what about going back home? While you may think that it will be easy to re-acclimate, you would be surprised. Some of if not all of you will go through reverse culture shock, and many past study abroad students find it more difficult than actually going abroad. This workshop will explain the process and provide tips on how to deal with academic and social/cultural shock.

Housing: There won´t be cleaning services during Feria

Student services:

Student Committee's activities:

• Now that the weather is warmer and the sun is out, doesn’t kayaking down the river sound like a great way to soak up the rays and get some exercise? The student committee has organized a group to go and do just this with OutdoorSevilla!
Kayaking on the Rio Guadalquivir:

When? Thursday, April 25th
Time? 6:00 PM
Price? 20 Euros (if 20 people are signed up. If not, 25 euros)
What's included? Two hours of kayaking (equipment included) with your friends where you will learn a bit about the bridges and see some spectacular views from a new perspective, and afterwards a barbeque to relax!

◦This is not a CEA sponsored activity, so it is optional and you will have to pay for it separately. In order to make this easier for you, an OutdoorSevilla representative will be coming to the CEA office on Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday April 23rd at 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM to collect your payment. (If you can't make it at that time, send the money with a friend).

THERE ARE LIMITED SPOTS AND THIS IS FILLING UP FAST. FILL OUT THE SURVEY OR LET US KNOW ASAP IF YOU WANT TO JOIN IN!

  • Soup Kitchen: A great way to get involved and give back to your community is by volunteering at local establishments. On a Sunday TBD you can go to the soup kitchen, prepare food, and then serve it to those who are less fortunate.
  •   Food drive: If you want to give back but can’t make a time commitment, please bring in a non-perishable food item CEA and the student committee will organize it and bring it to the soup kitchen or ONG organization. You have until 2 weeks before the last day of the semester (Friday, may 3rd) to turn in non-perishable food items so the student committee can donate it.
  • Clothes drive: At the end of the semester when you're packing to go home, I bet you will notice that you have accumulated a lot of clothes you don't want anymore, books you won't bring back, etc. If you want to donate them instead of throwing them away, bring them to CEA and together with the student committee and ONG organazations we can donate them to people in need.
  • Paintings exhibition: Feria de abril
From April 8th tillMay 4th
Location: C/ Canalejas, 6
SOROLLA ARTE.
Timetable: Monday to Saturday from 10.00 to14.00 and 17.00 to 21.00 - During Feria. 10.00 to 15.00 and 16.00 to 19.00

  • Stop by the entrance of the Corral del Conde, perhaps the most typical Andalusian patio you will see. At one time this was a corral de vecinos, where residents had simple living quarters but shared large kitchens and bathrooms. Today there are mostly small apartments. Many movies have been filmed here, when a step back in time was needed as a backdrop. Do stop by in the morning because in the afternoon the doors will almost certainly be closed. You'll find the corral on calle Santiago.

OFFICE HOURS DURING FERIA
CEA will be open 9:00-3:00 Monday-Friday,
except Wednesday April 17th we will be closed for a public holiday.

Here’s a little information about the Feria…
The April fair started back in 1846 as a livestock fair, but it didn’t take long for an air of festivity to take
over! These days it consists of dancing, dressing up in typical trajes de flamenco, drinking, riding in horse drawn carriages, and generally just having a great time! People get together in casetas which are tents with decorations, and a lot of food. Typically they are privately owned and you need an invitation to get in, but there are some public tents. The fair is well known nationwide and one of the biggest fairs there is! People come from all over the world to attend.

If you really want to live the Fair in an Andalusian way then let me tell you that the Feria day" is not over" until you have a cup of "caldo del puchero" (traditional Spanish soup made with chicken, meat, chick peas...) and a good dessert, either "churros" or "buñuelos".
The Feria is a time to enjoy yourselves. With that being said, we would like to give you some

recommendations for your safety during the fair:

Spanish Recipe of the day: Berenjenas fritas con miel

Ingredients:

  • 1 large eggplant
  • 1-2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (216 gr) virgin olive oil for frying
  • 1 cup (125 gr) unbleached white flour
  • 2-3 oz (60-80 gr) "miel de cana" (molasses or honey)

Preparation:

Molasses in Spanish is called melaza, or sometimes as miel(which is honey). This recipe traditionally uses Miel de Cana, or literally "sugar cane honey," and is very typical of the regions of Granada and Malaga, where this recipe originated. If miel de cana is not available in your area, you can substitute molasses, or your favorite honey.
Rinse the eggplant and dry with a towel. Slice the eggplant into rounds approximately 1/8-inch thick (3 mm).
Place the slices on a large cookie sheet or platter. Lightly salt the eggplant. Turn over and lightly salt the other side. Allow to sit for 1 hour to draw the moisture from the eggplant. Pat dry with a paper towel.
Pour olive oil into a medium frying pan and heat on medium-high heat. Pour the flour onto a large dinner plate and place near the stove. When oil is hot enough, dredge slices of eggplant in the flour on both sides, using tongs. Shake off excess flour, then fry in oil, turning when bottom begins to turn a golden color.
Remove the eggplant slices from the oil and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
When all slices have been fried, arrange them on a serving plate and drizzle molasses or honey over the top.

That´s all folks, have a lovely day
